How do I change my primary domain?

Overview

This article provides details on how to set the primary domain for your Media Temple servers.

Instructions

  1. Log into your Media Temple account.
  2. Click on the blue ADMIN button associated to your Shared Hosting server.

  3. Under the SETTINGS section, look for Primary Domain. Then select Change.

  4. Type your new domain name, then select Update.

  5. That's it! Your primary domain name should update within a few minutes.

Instructions for Grid

You can now change your primary domain in the Account Center, here's how:

NOTE:

You must have at least one alternate domain already on your Grid to be able to change your primary domain. For more information on adding a domain to your Grid, please see:

  1. Sign in to your Account Center.
  2. Click on your primary domain.
  3. The next screen is your Grid Control Panel, click View Your Guide in the Server Guide panel.

  4. Under the Domains section, click the Change button.

  5. The next screen has your alternate domains listed. From the drop-down menu, select your new primary domain, then click the Save button.

  6. On your Account Center Overview page, your primary domain has been changed.

Instructions for DV server

Currently, DV server customers can simply change the primary domain via the Account Center.

IMPORTANT:

Changing the primary domain will also change the hostname for the server. However, it will NOT change the hostname in Plesk, so you will want to change as well. It is also recommended that you change the Reverse DNS to match. Last but not least, you will want to perform a reboot.

  1. Sign in to the Account Center.
  2. Select the Admin button for the DV server, or choose the current primary domain for the server via the Domains tab.
  3. Select View Your Guide in the Server Guide panel.

  4. Select Change for primary domain.

  5. Provide the new primary domain you wish to use and click Save.

Instructions for (ve) Server

Currently, (ve) Server customers can simply change the primary domain via the Account Center.

IMPORTANT:

Changing the primary domain will also change the hostname for the server. It is also recommended that you change the Reverse DNS to match. Last but not least, you will want to perform a reboot.

  1. Sign in to the Account Center.
  2. Select the admin button for the (ve) Server, or choose the current primary domain for the server via the domains tab.
  3. Select View Your Guide in the Server Guide panel.

  5. Enter the new primary domain you wish to use and click Save.

Instructions for Managed WordPress

Use these instructions to change the primary domain for your Managed WordPress service. 

 

  1. Log into your Media Temple Account.
  2. Select the ADMIN button associated with your Managed Wordpress server.
  3. Select the Settings tab.

  4. Select Attach Domain.

  5. From the drop-down menu, select an existing domain or add an external domain or subdomain.
    • Ensure that Make this the primary domain for your account is enabled.
    • For external domains, do NOT add www.

  6. Select Attach.
  7. After a few minutes, you should receive a confirmation message that your site is now live on the new domain.

NOTE:
You must have at least one alternate domain already added to your Managed WordPress service to be able to change your primary domain. For more information on adding a domain to your Managed WordPress, please see: How do I add a domain or subdomain to my server?

  1. Sign in to the Account Center.
  2. Select your WordPress service from the services list. 
  3. Click on manage site. This is found by clicking on the preview box of one of your sites.                          
  4. From the My Site menu on the left, click on Domains.
  5. Add a new domain if needed. Use the drop down menu on the right to select a different primary domain.
