What are my options for managing DNS on the DV?

  • Applies to: All DV
    • Difficulty: Easy
    • Time Needed: 10
    • Tools Required: None

Overview

The DV and DV Dedicated hosting products include the option to manage DNS within your server instance in place of the default DNS controls available within the (mt) AccountCenter. This article explains the scope and usage of this functionality.

NOTE:

DNS within the AccountCenter

Most DV customers will want to manage their DNS within the AccountCenter for all of their domains. This means that you must have your domain registrar direct the name servers to NS1.MEDIATEMPLE.NET and NS2.MEDIATEMPLE.NET. If you have registered your domain with (mt) Media Temple, we already have these name servers set for you.

For information on how to edit and manage the DNS of a domain you are hosting on your DV & (dpv) via your AccountCenter, please read this article.

DNS within Plesk

By default, the DNS controls available within Plesk have no control over where your domain points to. In order to use them, you need to choose and configure one domain to act as a name server for all of your other domains. Since most users don't have a need for this feature within their server, bind is disabled by default on all DV 3.5 servers. See this other article for more information on disabling bind on older DV 2.0 or 3.0 servers.

The only time the DNS settings within Plesk should be used is when you are providing your own private name servers. This means you can use name servers such as ns1.mt-example.com and ns2.mt-example.com. Please be aware however, that you will be responsible for managing the DNS for your name servers, therefore (mt) Media Temple will be unable to provide full DNS support. If you are interested in using private name servers, you may find more information here.
