Overview
This article provides all the information you may want to know about "access domains". An access domain is a unique hostname that is assigned to a particular service. It will always resolve to your service, regardless of whether any other domains have DNS pointing to the service. This makes it very useful for various preview and connection functions.

Each Grid comes with a "web access domain" as well as an "email access domain".
Each WordPress Hosting site comes with a "web access domain". If you have Media Temple hosted email, the service will also have a separate "email access domain". If you are using Google Apps for Work, you will not have an email access domain provided by (mt) Media Temple.
The web access domain will look like this:
- s00000.gridserver.com
- s stands for "site."
- 00000 stands for your site number. This will be a unique number assigned to your account and server.
- gridserver.com is the parent domain of the Grid.
The email access domain is completely independent of the web access domain and will look something like this:
- xxxx-xxxx.accessdomain.com
- xxxx-xxxx will be a series of randomized letters. This will be totally unique to your specific Grid.
- Our new mail service uses "accessdomain.com" as its parent domain.
The web access domain will look like this:
- xxx.xxx.myftpupload.com
- The xxx.xxx portion will be a series of alphanumeric characters. This will be totally unique to your specific WordPress Hosting service.

Previewing your site
Your web access domain works as a preview for your primary domain. Just type http://s00000.gridserver.com in your favorite browser, and you'll see what you've uploaded so far! (Remember to replace 00000 with your personal site number.)
You can also use it for alternate domains - for example, alternate.com. In this case, you'll add the alternate domain name to the beginning of the URL, like this:
This is a great way to preview your site before you've pointed your domain to (mt) Media Temple.
See (mt) Media Temple's DNS/Nameserver information when you are ready to point your domain to (mt) Media Temple.
FTP and SSH connections
Your web access domain will actually work in any situation where you need to connect to the server (except email). Remember to replace 00000 in the examples with your personal site number.
- You can use s00000.gridserver.com as the server name in your favorite FTP program.
- See Using FTP and SFTP for details on setting up FTP software.
- You can use s00000.gridserver.com as both the username and the server name in SSH.
- See this article for details on SSH (the command-line interface for your server).
- As noted above, you can use xxxx-xxxx.accessdomain.com in your email program (for both the incoming server and outgoing server). Do NOT use s00000.gridserver.com for this purpose.
- See Using Email for details on setting up email software.
