How do I add a domain or subdomain to my server?

Overview

It's easy to add a domain or subdomain to any of your (mt) Media Temple servers.

Remember, a subdomain is a domain that is part of a top-level domain. For example:

  • mt-domain.org is a top-level domain
  • store.mt-domain.org is a subdomain.

Instructions

Adding a Domain

  1. Log into the (mt) Media Temple Account Center.
  2. Click on Domains. Then click Add New Domain or Serivce.

  3. Under ADD DOMAINS >> Add Domain or Zone File, click on ADD DOMAIN.

    Note:
    If you've already purchased the domain's registration at Media Temple or at another third-party registrar, adding the DNS Zone Files are FREE. But you have NOT registered your domain either at Media Temple or a third-party registrar, you will want to do so in this step, which may require payment for the registration. For more information on domain registration, feel free to view an additional guide here.

  4. Type your domain name in the text box.

    You will also use this step to select the following:
    I want to register this domain: If you have NOT purchased a domain registration at Media Temple, or a third-party provider. And need to register it.
    I already own this domain: If you've ALREADY purchased the domain registration at Media Temple or a third-party provider. OR you plan to only use the domain as a temporary placeholder that is not planned to be pushed live.

  5. Then click Use This Domain.
  6. Select the server you wish to add the domain to. Then click Continue Order.

  7. You will be taken to the Overview page of your Media Temple account. You should now see the domain added to the selected server.

If you encounter any error messages when attempting to add your domain, feel free to contact support by opening a support request, starting a chat, or by calling us at 1.310.841.5500.

Adding a Subdomain

For (www, mail, ftp):
Note that it is NOT necessary to manually add www, mail, or ftp as subdomains to your Media Temple account.
Simply adding mt-domain.org in the steps above will automatically generate www, mail, and ftp subdomains for you.

  1. Log into the (mt) Media Temple Account Center.
  2. Click on Domains. Then click Add New Domain or Service.

  3. Under ADD DOMAINS >> Add Domain or Zone File, click on ADD DOMAIN.

    Note: Because adding a subdomain does NOT require a registration, adding a subdomain DNS Zone File is FREE.

  4. Type your subdomain in the text box.
    For subdomains: select the I already own this domain option, as it is not necessary to register a subdomain.

  5. A message will appear asking you to confirm that you wish to add a subdomain.
  6. Check the box, Yes I want to add the subdomain. Then select Use This Domain.

  7. Select the server you wish to add the domain to. Then select Continue Order.

  8. You will be taken to the Overview page of your Media Temple account. You should now see the domain added to the selected server.
