Overview
For security reasons, your Grid comes with SSH access disabled by default. Here are instructions for enabling SSH access.
Instructions
- Log into your Account Center and click on your primary domain.
- Click on Server Administrator.
- Set the SSH option to Enabled and click Save.
NOTE:
This option enables SSH for the Server Administrator user only. This is the only Grid SSH user with wide-reaching permissions.

SSH access can be easily enabled through your Account Center.
Instructions
- Log into your Media Temple account.
- Select the blue ADMIN button associated to your server.
- Under Settings, select the Server tab.
- Next to SSH access, select Manage.
- A pop-up menu will appear. Ensure that SSH access is enabled, then exit from the screen.
SSH will now be enabled, you can use a third-party client to connect to your server.

Overview
"Root" is the superuser of your server, with wide-reaching access privileges. In some cases, enabling root access may be required when configuring your server. However, root access is not enabled for customers by default on the VPS for security reasons. If you find that you need to enable root user access, this can be done by following the instructions below.
CAUTION:
For security purposes, it is recommended that root access only be enabled if absolutely necessary. Once root access has been enabled, it cannot be reversed.
Instructions
- Log into your Media Temple account.
- Select the blue ADMIN button associated to your VPS server.
- Select the Settings tab.
- Locate Admin access and select Manage.
- Ensure Admin access is enabled. Then select Save.

- Log into your AccountCenter and select the primary domain for your DV server from the Domains drop-down menu, or use the Admin button from the Overview page (pictured). This will take you to the Control Panel for your DV.
- Select the Root Access & Developer Tools option from the Additional Tools menu.
- Click on Enable Root Access.
- Enter the reason for enabling Root Access, and agree to the terms and conditions by checking the I agree option on the screen.
- Enter and confirm your password. Use a password that is "strong" password that adheres to the Password requirements as shown and click Change Password. For more information, please see our Strong Password Guide.
- You now have root access enabled on your server!

- Select Show More.
- Locate SSH and select the slider.

- Log into your Account Center and enter the Managed WordPress Control Panel.
- Click on Manage Site for the site you would like to enable access for.
- From the My Site menu, find the SSH + SFTP panel and make sure that SSH Access is on.
