Shared Hosting Grid Managed WordPress servers do not have the ability to add additional IP addresses. If this is a feature that you'd like for your server, we'd recommend migrating to VPS Hosting.Overview
By default, all Media Temple services come with one IP address. However, customers can request to have IP addresses added to their server (subject to approval). For Legacy DV & VPS Hosting customers, each additional IP addresses is $5/month. For VPS Hosting customers, additional IP addresses are free, but there is a limit depending on the number of CPUs your server has:
- 1vCPU: 1 additional IP address.
- 2vCPU: 2 additional IP addresses.
- 4vCPU: 3 additional IP addresses.
- 8vCPU: 3 additional IP addresses.
NOTE:
IPv4 addresses are becoming very scarce. Media Temple reviews all IP requests. It is at our discretion (and only with clearly demonstrated need) that IP requests are granted. As such, we may reject your request for an additional IP address. For information on the IPv4 scarcity, please see this Wikipedia article.
Instructions
- Log into your Media Temple account.
- Select the blue ADMIN button associated to your VPS Hosting.
- In the bottom-right, locate your IP Addresses and select Request.
- Read the pop-up message regarding proper IP address usage.
- Select the Yes, I agree checkbox, and then select Submit request.
- That's it! Your IP address will be approved/denied within minutes. If approved, the new IP will appear in your Dashboard, under IP Addresses.
Please keep in mind that Media Temple only supplies the IP addresses. Customers are responsible for the management and configuration of additional IP address to make them work on their server.

Any VPS running Plesk 10.3 and higher supports the Server Name Indication (SNI) extension to the Transport Layer Security protocol, which makes it possible to use authentic SSL certificates for sites hosted on shared IP addresses. It is possible to order additional IP addresses as long as you have a valid reason for requiring them (such as running private Nameservers on your VPS). However, due to the overwhelming scarcity of dedicated IP addresses, these are granted on an as-needed basis and only if necessity can be clearly determined. We also limit our customers to a maximum of 16 IP addresses per VPS server.
Additional IP addresses may be requested by opening a support request with the following information:
- State the reason that each additional IP is required.
- Confirm that you fully accept the charges of $5/month for EACH additional IP address added to your services. If you would like to be charged for this yearly instead of monthly, please note that in the support request as well.
- Please provide the total number of new IP addresses you will be ordering. If you are ordering IP addresses for multiple services at once, please detail the total for each service.
In your support request, you will need to state your reason(s) for the additional unique addresses. "I have 8 sites and I want an IP for each of them" would not be considered a legitimate answer; such a justification will be declined. ARIN (American Registry for Internet Numbers) has strict rules regarding IP allocation, so we must adhere to their rules.
In some cases, we will be unable to add additional IP addresses to your server unless you move to a different IP range entirely, which will require changing all of your currently assigned IP addresses. For this reason, please be prepared to make changes to your current DNS configuration. Normally, this process is trivial and takes only 1-2 business days for us. However, there are some extreme cases that might make this process take 7-10 business days. In these instances, we will notify you first to ask how you would like to proceed.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is an SSL Certificate a good reason to request a dedicated IP address?
- While this may have been true several years ago, all Media Temple services support multiple SSL certificates via SNI (Server Name Identification). As such, a dedicated IP address is no longer a requirement for SSL and these requests cannot be met.
- I've heard conflicting information about SSL certs, SNI, and dedicated IP addresses on Windows XP. Should I be concerned about this?
- Windows XP is over a decade old, and Microsoft has discontinued all support and updates for this operating system. While it is true that some servers running SNI on deprecated versions of Internet Explorer (exclusive to this also-deprecated OS environment) may experience a certificate error, this is due to a very antiquated operating environment.
- Does having a dedicated IP address enhance my SEO rankings?
- This is an unfortunate and persistent rumor that has been definitively answered by none other than Google's former Director of Technology, Craig Silverstein. Silverstein publicly stated the following:
"...Google handles virtually hosted domains and their links just the same as domains on unique IP addresses. If your ISP does virtual hosting correctly, you’ll never see a difference between the two cases. We do see a small percentage of ISPs every month that misconfigure their virtual hosting, which might account for this persistent misperception–thanks for giving me the chance to dispel a myth!"
While certain sites that are abundant in search equity may have dedicated IP addresses by circumstance, correlation in this case does not equal causation. Additionally, even if a dedicated IP address was factored into search rankings (a disproven myth), this tiny factor would pale in comparison to the ranking weight awarded to unique, high quality, relevant, and popular content.
