Using the "Point to Another Server" Tool

  • Applies to: All Service Types
    • Difficulty: Easy
    • Time Needed: 10
    • Tools Required: Account Center access

Overview

Using the "Point to Another Server" tool in the (mt) Account Center, you can easily move a DNS zone file from one (mt) Media Temple server to another. Do keep in mind that this is for moving domains within the SAME Media Temple account. For moving domains into SEPARATE Media Temple accounts, you click here for more information.

Please read the following notes before using the Point to Another Server Tool:

ONLY MOVES DNS:
The Point to Another Server tool only moves DNS and does NOT move your website files. To move website files, you will need to conduct a site migration.

CUSTOM DNS:
During the move, custom DNS records (i.e. MX, CNAME, etc) may be reset. As a precaution, we recommend creating a TXT file of your DNS records by following the instructions here.

TTL:
Remember that DNS changes can take up to 24-48 hours to fully propagate across the Internet. To limit site interruptions, you may want to lower the TTL value of your domain, at least 12 hours prior to using the Point to Another Server tool.

IP NOT APPLICABLE:
When using the tool, check if the server you are moving to says "IP: Not Applicable." If this is the case, you should not expect new A-records to be automatically generated. These will need to be manually changed after pointing the domain:
