Instructions for SSH and Plesk are included in this article. cPanel does not have an extension or utility for Git, but it is installed on cPanel servers by default and may be used.

Git is included in the repositories for most major Linux package managers, including yum and apt. By connecting to your Media Temple server via SSH, you can easily install Git.

Plesk users: It is recommended that you install and manage Git using the extension included with Plesk version 17 and above. If you choose to install manually via SSH, it is safest to update your server using the update utility in the Plesk panel, rather than using yum. Using yum to update a Plesk install may cause problems with your Plesk installation.

CentOS / RedHat Linux distributions:

1. Make sure that your server is up-to-date.

sudo yum update

2. Install Git using the yum package manager.

sudo yum install git

3. Verify the install

git --version

1. Make sure that your server is up-to-date.

sudo apt-get update

2. Install Git using the apt package manager.

sudo apt-get install git

3. Verify the install

git --version

The Plesk Git extension makes it very easy to configure and manage Git. It includes integration with GitHub and Bitbucket.

These instructions are for installing the Git extension included in Plesk 17.08.16 (Plesk Onyx) and above. If you are using an older version Plesk, consider upgrading so that you can take advantage of many additional features.

1. Begin by logging into your Plesk panel and clicking on Extensions.

2. Click on Extension Catalogue at the top. Scroll down until you see the Git extension and click on Install.

3. After the installation process completes, click on Websites & Domains. You should now have a Git icon available beneath your sites. Click on it to configure your repositories.
