Check your domain's nameservers! This information will determine which instructions you will want to follow. Nameservers can be looked up by running a WHOIS lookup or using a third-party site like https://dnschecker.org and checking the NS records.

Email DNS

There are two DNS records required to point email to Media Temple:

  • MX-record pointing to mail.example.com (replacing example.com with your domain name).
  • A-Record pointing to your mail server IP address.
For DV Servers, the mail server IP is the same as the server IP address. This can be located in your Server Guide under the DNS Section:

For Grid Servers, your can find your Mail Server IP by first going into your Server Guide and locating the Incoming/Outgoing mail server.

Then using command-line or a third-party DNS website like https://dnschecker.org to look up the A-record for your Incoming/Outgoing mail server.

Nameservers pointed to Media Temple

If your nameservers are pointed to NS1.MEDIATEMPLE.NET and NS2.MEDIATEMPLE.NET, that means your nameservers are pointed to Media Temple. That means you will want to make your DNS changes in your Media Temple Account. If you are adding a domain or subdomain zone files to your domain for the first time, it will automatically generate the email hosting DNS for you in your Media Temple account. But if for some reason you need to manually enter them, we have a guide on how to do so:

Nameservers pointed to third-party host

If your nameservers are pointed at a different hosting company, then you will want to take the Email DNS provided above, and contact the third-party host directly for instructions on how to edit/update DNS records on their side.
