Overview
The following guide will provide information on how you can export and/or transfer your DNS zone files.
If you'd like a refresher for general information on DNS zone files and how they work, feel free to review our additional documentation here:
Export DNS
- Sign into the Account Center.
- Click the domain you want to edit.
- Under DNS & ZONE FILES, click on Edit DNS Zone File.
- Scroll to the bottom of your Edit DNS Zone file page and you should see an option to EXPORT ZONE FILE.
- A .txt version of your zone files will be downloaded. You can open this file in a text editor and you should see your zone files.
The .txt file is ony meant to be used as a written backup for reference and cannot be re-imported to the Account Center. If you wish to "import" the zone files, this can be done by opening the .txt file and copy/pasting the data into the Account Center.
- Sign in to the Account Center.
- For Grid Personal, Pro, and Elite users, click on the blue ADMIN button associated to your Grid server.
- Under SITES, click on the domain you wish to edit.
- For (gs) Grid Service or Grid Lite users, simply click on the domain you wish to edit.

NOTE:
Any changes to your DNS zone file will need to propagate across the Internet. As a general rule, we recommend to allow 24-48 hours for DNS propagation. Read below on how to lower your TTL value for a smooth transition.
- Sign in to the Account Center.
- Click on the blue ADMIN button associated to your WordPress server.
- Hover your cursor over the site slot you wish to access. Then click Manage.
- Click on Domains.
- Click on the MANAGE button associated to your domain.

Move DNS within the same account.
The following is for moving DNS within the SAME Media Temple account. In order to minimize downtime and/or DNS propogation, we recommend lowering your TTL 12-24 hours prior to conducting a DNS move. For information on lowering TTL, click here.
Point to another server tool
For moving domains within the same account, Media Temple has the Point to Another Server Tool. This allows customers to quickly perform this action on their own. For information on how to use this tool, feel free to click here.
Contact Support
If you'd like help in moving your DNS, feel free to contact support directly and we'd be happy to assist you.
- Support can be reached by opening a support request, starting a chat, or by calling us at 1.310.841.5500.
- For support requests, it's best to be as specific as possible with the name of domain to be moved, and the name of the service the domain is moving to/from.
For example:
"I am requesting to have the DNS zone files moved for mt-domain.com from my Grid Personal (primarydomain.com) to my Plesk server (primarydomain2.com)"
Move DNS to a separate account.
The following is for moving DNS across separate Media Temple accounts. In order to minimize downtime and/or DNS propogation, we recommend lowering your TTL 12-24 hours prior to conducting a DNS move. For information on lowering TTL, click here.
Submit a Support Request
- Have the ACCOUNT OWNERS of BOTH accounts submit a support request, requesting for the DNS to be moved.
For data protection purposes, a written support request from BOTH account owners is always required when transfering between separate Media Temple accounts. This will be required even if the same name is listed under both accounts.
- For ease of transfer, it's best to be as specific as possible with the name of domain to be moved, and the name of the service/account the domain is moving to/from.
For example:
"I am requesting to have the DNS zone files moved for mt-domain.com from the Grid Personal (primarydomain.com) in account #12345 to the Plesk server (primarydomain2.com) in account #54321"
