How can I add DNS zone files to my domain?

Overview

The following guide will provide instructions on how you can add DNS zone files to your domains. If you'd like a refresher on what exactly DNS is, feel free to review the article below:

Instructions

Add zone files to Domain Registration

Even if your domain is not attached to a server, you can still add DNS zone files to it.

  1. Log into your (mt) Media Temple Account.
  2. Click on the blue ADMIN button associated to your domain registration.

  3. Under DNS & ZONE FILES, click Add a Zone File.

  4. Select your domain registration service.

  5. Then select CONTINUE.

  6. You can now navigate back to DNS & ZONE FILES and will be able to edit your zone files.

Add zone files to your server

When adding a domain or subdomain to your server, you will be prompted with the option to add a zone file during that process. However, if you find the need to add zone files after a domain has already been added to a server, you may follow the instructions below:

  1. Sign into the Account Center.
  2. Click the domain you want to edit.

  3. Under DNS & ZONE FILES, click Create Zone File.

  4. Select your server.

  5. Then select CONTINUE.

  6. You can now navigate back to DNS & ZONE FILES and will be able to edit your zone files.

  1. Sign in to the Account Center.

    • For Grid Personal, Pro, and Elite users, click on the blue ADMIN button associated to your Grid server.

    • Under SITES, click on the domain you wish to edit.

    • For (gs) Grid Service or Grid Lite users, simply click on the domain you wish to edit.

  2. Under DNS & ZONE FILES, click on Create Zone File.

  3. Select your server.

  4. Then select CONTINUE.

  5. You can now navigate back to DNS & ZONE FILES and will be able to edit your zone files.

NOTE:

Any changes to your DNS zone file will need to propagate across the Internet. As a general rule, we recommend to allow 24-48 hours for DNS propagation. Read below on how to lower your TTL value for a smooth transition.

  1. Sign in to the Account Center.
  2. Click on the blue ADMIN button associated to your WordPress server.

  3. Hover your cursor over the site slot you wish to access. Then click Manage.

  4. Click on Domains.

  5. Click on the MANAGE button associated to your domain.

  6. Under DNS & ZONE FILES, click on Create Zone File.

  7. Select your server, and the desired WordPress site slot you wish to add the zone files to.

  8. Then select CONTINUE.

  9. You can now navigate back to DNS & ZONE FILES and will be able to edit your zone files.
